The Badger boys cross country team won their own invitational last Thursday. Tomas Pecha finished first (16:38), Alex Martinez took second (16:42), Gavin Denecke was fifth (17:33), and Jake Pierce finished seventh (17:57).

“It was nice to see the men rewarded for their hard work,” Coach Mike Butscher said. “We know they have been a little frustrated by not having faster time, but we have run some tough courses and in some tough conditions.”

Butscher said the team’s performance at the invitational was among the best the program has had in recent years and the team has never had a team time as low as this one this early in the season. Butscher said it was a great sign to see the entire varsity team under 18:30 at this point in the season. Butscher has been impressed with how well the team has jelled and bought into the “we over me” pledge the team took.

“The men know that there is still a lot of hard work to do to reach their numerous goals,” Butscher said. “A meet like this will hopefully be a springboard to even better practice efforts and meet performances.”
