On late-19th century farms, September was the time to begin the work of the harvest and prepare for winter. At Old World Wisconsin, each weekend in September there will be many opportunities to help with the same tasks the original settlers to Wisconsin would have done.
Each September weekend has a different theme:
• Sept. 15-16: Cookies and Kuchen: Wood stoves will be fired up for Christmas baking, which often began in the fall, as some cookies needed time to develop their flavors and special characteristics.
On Saturday, Sept. 15 only, from 1-4 p.m. in the museum store, visitors may meet Wisconsin Historical Society Press author Jerry Apps, who will be signing copies of his many gardening and farming-related books, including “Garden Wisdom: Lessons Learned from 60 Years of Gardening,” “Horse-Drawn Days: A Century of Farming with Horses,” and “Old Farm: A History.”
• Sept. 22-23: In a Pickle: Visitors will learn about historic pickling and canning methods, including the many surprising things that can be pickled besides a cucumber.
• Sept. 29-30: A Walk in the Woods: Guests are invited to savor the season’s fullness as they explore the areas between the farmsteads.
Admission is $16 for adults, $14 for students and seniors (65 and older), $9 for children 5-17 and free for children younger than 5. Family admission (up to two adults and two or more dependent children 5-17) is $43.
Museum hours are Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
