The Badger High School wrestling team has had an up and down season. They were up on Saturday taking second behind a strong Burlington team at the Southern Lakes Conference meet at Union Grove.
After making its second consecutive trip to state last year expectations were high this year, but coach Shane Koehl was faced with replacing many key seniors lost to graduation. The result has been some big wins but also a few losses that had kept Badger behind Burlington and Elkhorn in the SLC.
Badger stepped up on Saturday scoring 213 team points. Burlington won the meet with 251.5. Elkhorn took third with 206.
Three Badgers were individual champions. Alex Martinez at 113 pounds scored 22 team points by winning two matches. He defeated Connor Leahy of Elkhorn by 6-0 decision in the first-place match. Michael Peter at 120 pounds scored 22 team points with three victories. Peter defeated Bryce Fitzgerald of Elkhorn by 8-4 decision in the first-place match. Andrew Cychner scored 24 team points with two wins. Cychner beat Hegeman Tiedt of Burlington by 7-3 decision in the first-place match.
George Somerville at 106 pounds took second and scored 18 team points. Somerville lost the first-place match to Justin Ratkovec of Waterford by 7-1 decision. Zach Leonard at 138 pounds took second and scored 18 team points. Leonard lost the first-place match to Konnor Mohr of Elkhorn by 4-2 decision.
Several Badgers finished third including Bryan Nugent at 145 pounds with 15 points, Tony Howard at 152 pounds with 16 points, Andrew Allen at 160 pounds with 16 points, Ruben Garcia at 220 pounds with 15 points and Andrew Nugent at 285 pounds and 16 points.
Badger also defeated Union Grove 57-19 in a dual meet on Feb. 4. Cychner won the first match by major decision but the Broncos won the next three, two by pin, to take a 15-4 lead. Badger battled back winning the next four matches, lost one match, then won the final five, all by pin. Badger had seven total pins.
Individual winners other than Cychner were Somerville by forfeit, Martinez by pin, Peter by technical fall, Chase Craig at 126 pounds by pin, Leonard by pin, Bryan Nugent by pin, Tony Howard by pin, Andrew Allen by pin, and Trevor Steiner by pin.
Badger will compete at the regional at Janesville Craig on Saturday.

Girls flame out Comets
The Badger girls basketball team dominated Delavan-Darien on Feb. 6 winning 65-25 in Delavan.
The Badgers won easily despite only having 10 players available because of injuries. Julia Adams has been out all year with an ankle injury, Andrea Chironis has been battling concussion symptoms, Jaclyn Teuting has a foot injury, and Kortlyn Freeman is in a walking boot after injuring her foot in a win over Muskego on Feb. 4.
Early on, both teams found it difficult to score. Near the end of the first quarter it was even at five before Badger went on a 6-0 run to lead 11-5 at the break. All six points came off of steals. Maria Mieres-Rey had two steals and layups, and Brianna Flower had the other.
The two teams traded points early in the second quarter but Badger took command with a 15-1 run to lead 29-12 at the half. Badger did not let off the gas in Quarter 3, pushing the lead to 29 by the end of the quarter at 50-21. The Badgers outscored the Comets (3-11, 1-7) 21-9 in the quarter and 15-4 in the fourth.
Badger (14-3, 7-1 SLC) made seven three-pointers and was led by Flower’s 15 points. Mieres-Rey added 14, and Jennifer Freeman had 13.
Badger also defeated winless Muskego 44-33 on Feb. 4 on the road. Badger led just 7-4 at the end of one but pulled away in the middle quarters. Badger outscored Muskego 12-5 in the second quarter and 15-5 in the third to lead 34-14 heading into the final frame. Muskego made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring Badger 19-10 but it was too late.
Mieres-Rey led Badger with 18 points. Lily Quinn added 15.
Boys split
The Badger boys defeated Delavan-Darien 77-59 on Feb. 4 on the road. The Comets (4-15, 2-10 SLC) kept things close early and the first quarter ended in a 19-all tie. Badger started hitting three-pointers and took control in Quarter 2 and led 35-27 at the half. Badger scored 42 second-half points to pull away.
The Comets could not stop 6-foot-7-inch Logan Tenney, who led Badger (9-8, 4-6) with 18 points. Lincoln Wieseman added 17. Derrick Buntrock had five of Badger’s 10 threes and finished with 16 points. Isiah Ramos led the Comets with 21. Stephan Rodriguez added 13.
Badger lost to Burlington 72-63 last Friday. The Demons (9-9, 7-4) owned the first half, outscoring Badger 17-11 and 22-10 to lead 39-21 at the half. Badger shaved two off their deficit in the third quarter and outscored Burlington 21-14 in the fourth, but it was not enough.
Jake Kozlowski led Badger with 14 points. Wieseman and Tenney both added 13. Burlington’s Franklin Hozeska led all scorers with 25.
