Girls basketball wins two, boys lose two

The Badger High School wrestlers won all five of their matches last week.
The Badgers began the week beating Waterford 53-11 on Jan. 21. They ended the week sweeping four dual matches at the Wauwatosa West Invitational on Saturday.
Badger built up a 31-0 lead on undermanned Waterford before giving up a point. Badger won many of its matches by forfeit. Individual winners in matches that were held for Badger included Andrew Nugent at 285 pounds by decision, George Somerville at 106 by decision, Michael Peter at 126 by major decision, Sam Carmona at 138 by decision, Tristan Steiner at 160 by pin, Trevor Steiner at 170 by pin, and Andrew Cychner at 182 by major decision.
On Saturday, Badger defeated Oconomowoc 37-28. Badger took a 10-0 lead on a major decision by Chase Craig at 126 pounds and a forfeit. Oconomowoc answered back with a major decision and two decisions to tie the score. Badger won two of the next three matches with a major decision by Tristan Steiner and a pin by Cychner to lead 20-13. Oconomowoc won the next three to take a 28-20 lead. Badger won the final three matches and 17 points of the match on pins by Somerville and Peter and a technical fall win by Alex Martinez at 113 pounds.
Badger then won another close one with Milwaukee South. Badger took a 9-0 lead on a decision by Peter and a forfeit. South scored six on two decisions. Badger answered with six of its own on a pin by Bryan Nugent at 145 pounds to lead 15-6. South won the next three matches to lead 19-15. Cychner got a three-point decision to bring Badger within one, but South won the next two to lead 28-18. Badger stormed back with three pins by Andrew Nugent, Somerville and Martinez to win the match 36-28.
Badger beat West Allis Hale 55-14. Individual winners included Steven Dublin at 138 pounds by pin, Bryan Nugent by pin, Tony Howard at 152 by pin, Trevor Steiner by decision, Cychner by major decision, Nick Halpin at 195 by injury default, Martinez by decision and Carmona by decision.
Badger defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 33-28. Craig got Badger started off well with a pin for six points. Two three-point decisions by Lutheran tied the score. A technical fall win by Howard put Badger up 11-6. Lutheran won the next two matches to lead 17-11 but Badger then won two with a pin by Cychner and decision by Reggie Kelly at 195 pounds to lead 20-17. Lutheran surged back in front on two wins by decision and pin and led 26-20. A decision by Somerville and a pin by Mutimer put Badger back in front at 29-26. Lutheran tied it up at 29 but Peter won by major decision in the final match to pull out the victory. Lutheran also lost a point due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
Badger hosts Wilmot tonight and Union Grove next Tuesday.
Girls win two of three
The Badger girls basketball team won twice and lost once last week.
Badger defeated Kenosha Tremper 50-36 in non-conference play on Jan. 21. Badger led 15-6 after one quarter and 25-19 at intermission. After an even third quarter the Badger defense held Tremper (10-5) to four points in the fourth and Badger pulled away.
Maria Mieres-Rey led Badger with a game-high 22 points. Kortlyn Freeman added 11. Tai’shae Hunter led Tremper with 14.
Badger beat Waterford (8-3, 4-1) 44-39 on Jan. 23 to pull a half game back of Wilmot (6-1) for second in the Southern Lakes Conference at 5-1.
Badger jumped all over Waterford in the first quarter leading 13-2 when it was over. The two middle quarters were even. The Wolverines made a run in the fourth quarter outscoring Badger 21-16, but Badger held on.
Waterford held Mieres-Rey to five points. Lily Quinn led Badger with 10. Jennifer Freeman added nine. Waterford’s Shauna Malchine and Tiffany Stiewe both had 13.
The Badgers (11-3) dropped a non-conference game against Fort Atkinson (6-7) 41-35 at home on Saturday as part of a double-header with the boys. Badger’s offense struggled as the Badgers were held to single digits in the first three quarters.
Fort did not take advantage in the first half scoring just 23 themselves to lead 23-18 at the half. Even though Badger scored just four in the third quarter, Fort scored just nine, so Badger was still within striking distance at 32-22 going into the final frame. Badger had its best quarter scoring 13, but it wasn’t enough.
Quinn led the way with nine. Mieres-Rey was again held in check with seven. Fort was led by Emma Reed and Kylie Coleman who both had 16.
Badger was scheduled to host Wilmot in a showdown for first place on Tuesday night but that game was in danger of being postponed due to the weather at press time. Badger hosts Westosha Central tomorrow night and travels to Muskego next Tuesday.
Boys drop two of three
The Badger boys lost to Waterford (7-6, 6-2) 56-44 on Jan. 21. Badger led 10-9 at the end of one but the Wolverines took the second quarter 1-4 to lead 19-14 at the break. After a low-scoring first half, Waterford outscored Badger 37-30 in the second to pull out the win.
Derrick Buntrock and Lincoln Wieseman led Badger with 12 points each. Trace Hunsucker went off for 25 for Waterford. Collin Chart added 14.
Badger lost to Wilmot (10-4, 5-2) 55-54 on Jan. 24. Jake Kozlowski led the way with 14. Wieseman added 12 and Jake Berhorst had 10.
Badger (6-7, 2-5) beat Watertown (4-11) in non-conference action as part of the double-header with the girls at home on Saturday 66-46.
Watertown led 18-15 at the end of one but Badger took control by outscoring the Goslings 43-17 in the middle quarters. Wieseman had 13, Logan Tenney had 11, and Berhorst and Kozlowski both chipped in 19. Billy Oswald led Watertown with 15. Jake Larkin added 14.
Badger was scheduled to make up a game that was postponed due to weather on Tuesday at Union Grove, but weather threatened to postpone that game as well. Badger will host Westosha Central tomorrow night. Badger travels to Baraboo Saturday afternoon and to Delavan-Darien next Tuesday.
