Livestock producers who use pasture to provide part or all of their animal forage needs are invited to attend a winter workshop that will be offered Thursday, Jan. 30. The program will be held 9:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Randy’s Restaurant & Funhunter’s Brewery, 841 E. Milwaukee Street, Whitewater.
Session topics will focus on management practices that producers can implement to optimize forage production and longevity of pastures, including new fertility recommendations, selection of forage varieties that provide season-long feed for animals, and the grazing of cover crops.
Planting of cover crops to alleviate soil compaction and erosion, scavenge nitrogen, and provide weed control is becoming an accepted practice in many farming operations. Cover crops can have the added benefit of providing supplemental feed for grazing animals. The impact of different rotational grazing protocol on productivity of pastures will also be discussed.
Registration for the program will begin at 9:45 a.m. and presentations are slated until 3:30 p.m. Lunch and grazing resources will be included with the program fees at $20 per person. Registration by Monday, Jan. 27 is requested.
