Glenn Hayes met with 31 members of the Whitewater community and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater students Sept. 9 to discuss the formation of a Whitewater community-campus band.
Hayes is a professor of music at UWW and also director of the Warhawk Marching Band.
“This is my grand experiment,” said Hayes. “I’ve been wanting to do something like this for numerous years. There are models of this kind of organization all across the country on various campuses that involve both students and community members.”
Rehearsals will be held at UWW on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. in preparation for a concert on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
UWW students are also eligible to earn one credit/unit for participating in the ensemble.
“This is solely meant to be fun and a good educational experience as well,” Hayes noted.
Citing his own experience as a member of the Northshore Community Band north of Chicago while he was a graduate student, Hayes said, “I’ve seen incredible fun times and love of music making come out of community/campus groups.”
There is still an opportunity for members of the community and UWW students to join with this band by contacting Hayes at [email protected].
