Beware of fraudulent activity in the area

The East Troy Police Department is warning area residents of two recent incidents that appear to be fraudulent in nature.

On Aug. 20, a 76-year-old man reported to police that he had received a phone call from the Federal Reserve Bank in Miami, Fla. The person on the phone stated that the man had won $3,000,000, a Mercedes Benz automobile and $100,000 in cash.

The man was told that the car and the cash were to be delivered to his residence and that he would receive the $3,000,000 at a later date.

He was instructed to go to his bank and withdraw $2,500 and put the money into Walmart money orders.

Police note that this is most likely a fraudulent activity and that no legitimate company would tell a person they had won money and other prizes and then expect the person to give them money in return.

Also on Aug. 20, a 69-year-old man reported to village police that he had received a letter postmarked using an international airmail stamp. The envelope contained a check in the amount of $4,250. A letter accompanying the check stated that the check, from Navistar Inc., Nashville, Tenn., was to assist the recipient in paying a processing fee of $3,850.

The man who received the letter told police he knew it was attempted fraud and wanted police to be aware of the situation. The man was advised by police to contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation at fbi.gov.
