Whitewater’s relationship with John’s Disposal for trash and recycling pickup will continue through at least the end of 2027, based on a recent decision from city officials.
John’s, which is based in Whitewater, has long been the city’s contracted firm for hauling away residents’ unwanted items. Whitewater is in the final stretch of its existing agreement with the company.
Public Works Director Brad Marquardt, who has been working with John’s on the new contract, said the company presented two options — a one-year renewal, with an increase in concert with the consumer-price index, or a five-year agreement with a lower rate hike in the initial year.
Had the city renewed with John’s through just the end of 2023, the company’s rates would have increased 8.6%.
“That is in line with what the contract would allow,” Marquardt said, pointing to the current CPI rate that is reflective of inflationary pressures.
