United Way of Walworth County and Toe to Toe Ballet School have announced that for the second year, United We Dance will be returning to Elkhorn. The event – which will feature more than 10 groups – will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 6, in the James A. Wehner Auditorium at Elkhorn Area High School.

The idea for United We Dance bloomed in 2020 from Colleen Huberty, who is well-rooted in the dance community and director of Toe to Toe Ballet School in Elkhorn.

“Dance is highly collaborative. It’s important for our dancers to work together,” said Huberty. “United We Dance is a celebration of culture, and so much more than a dance recital.”

More than 10 groups will perform during the 90-minute show including Broadway Academy of Art & Dance, The Dance Factory, Dreams Studio, Kids From Wisconsin, Midwest Dance Center, Next Step Dance Studio, Walworth County Cloggers and Toe to Toe Ballet School.

All proceeds from United We Dance benefit more than 40 local nonprofit programs and services through the United Way of Walworth County.

“For the dancers, this goes far beyond what they learn to perform on stage,” said Tammy Dunn, executive director of the United Way of Walworth County. “They are coming together as a team, learning how they can give back and make a positive impact in their communities through dance.”

Regarding COVID-19, this year’s event is expected to sell out quickly. Normally the auditorium holds 816 guests but this year only 200 socially distanced tickets will be sold and masks will be required.

United We Dance was a significant fundraiser for the United Way of Walworth County in 2020.

“This year looks different for sure,” said Dunn. “We are unable to have concessions, a raffle, or sponsors.”

Like many nonprofits who have forfeited events due do the pandemic, the co-hosts of United We Dance have pivoted as well.

“We are going to safely and responsibly give our dancers a chance to perform for their friends, family and community,” Huberty said. “At the same time, it’s important to us to be able help so many of our neighbors, especially now, and we can do that through the United Way.”

Individuals unable to attend can still contribute to United We Dance and the United Way of Walworth County by mailing donations to P.O. Box 1020, Elkhorn, WI 53121 or giving online at unitedwaywalworth.org.
