The Delavan-Darien football team gave undefeated Burlington all they could handle for a half on Sept. 27, but fell 28-10 in a game that Coach Hank Johnson said was closer than the score indicated.
“We never felt out of the game at any point,” Johnson said. “Overall, a good competitive game for us and it shows the confidence we have that we can stick with teams.”
He said if the Comets had not missed an interception opportunity in the end zone and if the offense had been able to put the ball in the end zone from inside the Burlington 20-yard line, the outcome might have been different.
That missed opportunity came early in the third quarter, when Burlington led just 14-10. The Demons had moved the ball right down the field and scored on a 14-yard pass from Dalton Damon to Otto Traxinger. Defensive back Josh Mick made a great play on the ball in the end zone and almost came up with an interception. Instead, the ball slipped through his hands and into the waiting hands of Traxinger.
“It looked like he miss-timed his jump and unfortunately it bounced right to their receiver,” Johnson said.
