An unexpected group of visitors made quite a buzz on the final day of the Walworth County Fair on Labor Day – a swarm of bees.
After separating from their home hive, according to local beekeepers, the swarm – including the queen bee – rode to the fairgrounds in the wheel well of a demolition derby car. At some point the swarm decided to conduct a fly over the fairgrounds and area before landing on a horse statue near the entrance.
A couple members of a local beekeepers club responded and with a little help cordoning off the area by local law enforcement, captured the swarm estimated to contain 20,000 bees, safely.
Walworth County Beekeepers Club members used the incident as an opportunity to educate the crowd of onlookers that gathered about honey bees. During the six-day fair, which ended on Labor Day, the club shared information about bees and had an observation hive to allow people to see the bees at work.
