The gardens at Kathleen Renowden’s corner house on King Street in Delavan are filled with blossoming pollinator plants, some of which are nearly as tall as cornstalks.
Renowden, an eight-year Delavan resident, created her garden on a 140 by 65-foot lot near Delavan Lake. The pollinator paradise consists of 160 species of native and non-native plants that range from a burr oak tree to a vivid arrangement of shrubs and flowers on the way to her front door.
“My goal is to show that anyone in a suburban, urban or rural landscape can create a garden that helps the environment,” Renowden said in a press release in support of the Geneva Lake Conservatory Pollinator Hike Prairie Walk on July 27.
That event will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Pollinator Garden, 2916 King St., Delavan, and White River County Park, 6503 Sheridan Springs Rd. in Lake Geneva. The cost is $10.
In her Pollinator Pallette’s standard suburban home lot, there are over 140 species and varieties of wildflowers and over 180 varieties of shrubs, vines and trees.
“Due to size limitations, my goal has been to provide at least one example of all of these so people can view what these plants actually look like in the garden and what might work for them,” Renowden said.
