Katie Biermann enjoyed a compelling and interesting relationship with Dr. Scott Beatse.
Beatse delivered Biermann’s 10-year-old daughter, and she later worked with Beatse for two years in birth and delivery at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn.
Beatse died June 2 during a triathlon in Lake Mills. According to his obituary he reportedly died of a heart attack when he entered the water for the swim event.
He was 59, and lived in Elkhorn.
Biermann worked with Beatse as an obstetrician and gynecology technician…
“He was very comfortable to talk to,” Biermann said. “His bedside manners were, by far, the best I’ve seen from a doctor. He took the time to sit and talk to you and really listen to you…”
Kate Harrod, a certified nurse midwife at Lakeland, worked with Beatse for 21 years…
Harrod said she didn’t need to call Beatse for help very often, but likened him to a knight in shining armor who arrived to save the day when help was needed.
“He was a calming presence,” Harrod said. “I always took a deep breath when he came through the door, knowing everything would be okay.”
Amy Amann saw Beatse as her physician for 21 years. She said he helped her and her husband through the process of having children and adding to their family.
Amann and her husband have four children – including two they adopted from Ethiopia at Beatse’s suggestion.
“We had two children,” Amann said. “Dr. Beatse knew that we really did want more, and he always gave us every option available…”
Amann said Beatse was supportive of anything in her life – not just her health – and showed genuine concern for wellbeing…
“He was just so good at what he did. He was a good doctor, but a better human being.”
