Rotary Club of Elkhorn to celebrate this weekend

There might not be any one person more ready to celebrate the Rotary Club of Elkhorn’s 50th anniversary this weekend than John Henderson, who has been with the club since Day 1.
He said the club, which was sponsored by the Burlington Rotary, took awhile to get off the ground.
“We met at various places then – Sterlingworth, the Episcopal Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church and so on. It took some time to get 20 members,” Henderson said.
Rotary is unique, according to Henderson, because it’s a volunteer organization all the way through.
“Service Above Self is the motto and it’s non-political and non-religious so allows people to come together,” he said.
For the rest of the story, including more of the interview with Henderson as well as current Elkhorn Rotary president Dawn Heath and longtime member Karen Kallem, pick up the May 2 Elkhorn Independent.
Below is a condensed version of a sidebar about Saturday’s events, which also appears in the newspaper.
Extravaganza to feature Food Truck Festival
The Rotary Club of Elkhorn is spearheading a multi-cuisine Food Truck Festival at the annual Elkhorn Spring Extravaganza slated 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. Rotary is co-hosting this year’s community festival with the Elkhorn Economic Development Alliance.
This year’s expanded Extravaganza will again be held in downtown Elkhorn and in addition to the food trucks it’ll include musical entertainment, bounce castles, face painting, balloon art, fire trucks, crystal mining, EASD Parent Connections kids’ activities and vendors of local products and services on and around the square.
LakeTown Hound mobile grooming will be offering $5 nail trims, with proceeds going to Lakeland Animal Shelter. Many local retailers are also expected to offer day-of deals.
This event will also highlight Rotary’s international efforts to eradicate polio including an actual “iron lung” on display.
Rotary’s 50th anniversary party will kick-off at 10 a.m., Saturday, with a ceremonial cake cutting and a state proclamation honoring the Elkhorn Rotary Club’s 50 years of service.
