The City of Elkhorn Common Council voted in favor of replacing the mat the bottom of the slide at Sunset’s Pool at a cost of $8,792 at its April 15 meeting.
Department of Public Works Operations Manager Matt Lindstrom brought the topic before councilmembers at the previous week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, noting that the edges of the mat started to tear during the latter part of last season, right where it’s attached to the pool. At that time, he said the department used washers to fasten it down, though he doesn’t think the fix will last another full season.
While the mat is still in usable shape, the fastening system is failing and Lindstrom said that makes it difficult to keep it from detaching and floating upwards from the bottom.
In order to keep the slide operational for the upcoming season, a new mat would have to be installed before the pool was filled.
Councilmembers, who were uncomfortable with the approximate $9,000 price tag, had asked Lindstrom to reach out to other companies and municipalities to see if there were other alternatives.
