Elkhorn Police are investigating what appears to be a sexual assault that occurred in the city Tuesday night. Police are searching for the suspect and the vehicle he may have been driving.
Officers were dispatched to the area of East Geneva and South Lincoln streets at about 10:15 p.m., Aug. 28 for an unknown problem, according to a press release from Elkhorn Police Chief Joel Christensen.
When officers arrived at the South Lincoln Street parking lot, they found a woman who was “seriously injured” in what was later determined to be her vehicle.
According to relatives of the woman, she had left her job shortly after 9 p.m. but did not immediately return home. They began looking for her and when they found her vehicle in the parking lot, an unknown man fled the scene on foot, heading east and entering the backyard of a residence in the 10 block of South Jackson Street, the release states.
When the woman’s family members found her in the vehicle, injured, they called 911.
“The victim was unable to communicate with officers, but it did appear that (she) was the victim of sexual assault,” the release states.
The woman was transported to Aurora Lakeland Medical Center and her condition is unknown at this time.
Police are attempting to locate a maroon conversion van that has the rear passenger window covered with plastic. The van was reportedly seen at the business prior to the attack.
