Lake Geneva Fire Department to host safety event Tuesday
Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be in Lake Geneva next week as part of the Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Traffic and Highway Safety, for a Child Passenger Safety Car Seat Check-up Event.
Volunteer, certified child passenger safety technicians will be installing child safety seats as well as educating parents and caregivers to ensure children are riding safely from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Lake Geneva Fire Department, 730 Marshall St.
As part of the conference, Walworth County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with the Department of Transportation’s Wisconsin Child Passenger Safety Program, led by Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Lake Geneva Fire Department to host the event.
“When installed and used correctly, child safety seats and safety belts can prevent injuries and save lives. Child safety seats can reduce fatal injury by up to 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers ages 1 to 4,” said Nicolo Maniaci, Wisconsin Child Passenger Safety program coordinator.
According to Deputy Dan Nelson of the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, there are only 10 certified child safety seat technicians in Walworth County.
“That is why having this event here in Walworth County is important,” Nelson said. “With only 10 car seat technicians, and statistics showing that three out of four car seats are not used or installed incorrectly, we need this in our community. This will be by far the largest child safety seat event Walworth County has ever had, but only if people show up with car seats to be checked.”
Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can be made by visiting www.SafeKidsWI.org/appt.
