Historical Society to host open house

The Historical Society of Walworth and Big Foot Prairie, Inc., a Wisconsin State Historical Society Affiliate, will host a Plaque Dedication and Open House event at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, July 26 at 101 Maple Ave., Walworth.

On December 22, 2003, the Historical Society of Walworth and Big Foot Prairie, Inc. was incorporated. The goal of the society is to collect and preserve the history of Walworth and the adjoining Big Foot Prairie.

The group has been involved in presenting educational programs in local schools, collecting oral histories of community members, exhibiting historical displays and providing local history programs for the general public.

The long-term objectives included acquisition of a site where the group could hold meetings, conduct educational programs and display items of historical interest. Those objectives have come into being with the purchase of the former Walworth Memorial Library in September 2015.

Since 2015, the following goals have been met: Genealogical and Historical Library; Military and DAR room; newspaper gallery; wedding dress display; McElwain Quilt Room; and the following exhibits – American Indian, pioneer, early Walworth, school, farm, church family, Kikkoman, Big Foot area, and Boy Scout and Girl Scout.

In addition to the dedication there will be recognition of Heyer Hardware’s 150th anniversary.

All of the exhibits The Historical Society of Walworth and Big Foot Prairie hosts are open to the public free of charge.
