A contested race on today’s ballot for three Village of Walworth trustee seats featured five candidates. Incumbents Randy Maynard and LeRoy Nordmeyer retained their seats and will be joined by challenger Louise Czaja.
According to unofficial results, vote totals are as follows: Nordmeyer, 293 votes; Maynard, 272; Czaja, 257; challenger Michael Long, 247; and incumbent Ed Snyder, 246.
Maynard moved to Walworth in 1981 and is a member of the fire and rescue department. He said being of service to the village is important and mentioned the importance of parks for kids.
In a forum held prior to the election, the three issues Maynard said most affecting the village currently are: fire and rescue due to a shortage of members; streets, and; parks – specifically concerns about baseballs and nets.
Nordmeyer, who has been a board member for 14 years and previously served as fire chief in the village, said the No. 1 issue in the village – as of the middle of last week, noting it constantly changes – is the unexplained water loss, followed by maintaining existing infrastructure and Lakeview Subdivision.
“Sometimes you have to come up with creative solutions. For example, recently we were focusing on one well when another one that’s a larger producer began having issues so that goes to the top of the list,” Nordmeyer said.
Czaja, the former village clerk/treasurer, said prior to the election she has been in the community a long time and had been going door-to-door in the village in the week’s prior to the election, meeting residents, asking their concerns and sharing her vision.
“Where are we going? Are we still the friendly village on the square? The definition of community is a group of people living in the same place,” Czaja said.
