The Elks took the lead for good with a run in the top of the fifth inning and beat Westosha Central 6-3 May 4 in a Southern Lakes Conference baseball game at Paddock Lake.
Elkhorn played Monday at Milton, and played Tuesday at Burlington and Wednesday at Badger in SLC games. The Elks played at home Thursday against Burlington in another SLC game.
“Once again – great defense,” Elks coach Jon Anzalone said of the victory against the Falcons. “ One other thing we did really well is we had a lot of two-strike hits and two-out hits. That really helped.”
Central (6-8, 2-5 SLC) led 3-0 before the Elks (10-5, 5-3 SLC) tied the score with three runs in the third inning. The Elks went ahead for good with a run in the fifth, and added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Lucas Harding went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jordan Vandyke went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Dakota Biefeld went 3-for-4.
Jet Weber finished with two hits and a run scored. Nick Rockweiler went 3-for-4 with two hits. The Elks tallied 26 hits as a team.
Vandyke and Ben McConnell scattered 12 hits over seven innings and struck out four on the mound for the Elks.
Anzalone said the Elks demonstrated confidence at the plate, and after hours of practice demonstrated the ability to grasp an approach to situational hitting, as opposed to just being at-bat.
“They’re a great group to be around,” Anzalone said. “They work hard, and really have bought into each other. They’re seeing some good things happen.”
