The stage is set for the East Troy High School boys tennis team to have a big few weeks.
Now the Trojans just have to take care of business.
East Troy kept pace at the top of the Rock Valley Conference standings last week with a 5-2 win at Edgerton, which kept the Trojans perfect at 3-0 and in a tie with Big Foot.
The Trojans traveled to Big Foot on Thursday in a pivotal early-season matchup for the RVC regular-season title.
“I’m really proud of our guys for working hard and pulling for each other,” East Troy coach Dave Lindow said. “They have their eyes set on a conference championship and are willing to work hard to achieve that.”
East Troy swept the singles to lead the effort at Edgerton.
Winning matches were Brody Woodson at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1; Vince Baxter at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0; Nick Bourdo at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2; and Jared Paullin at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2.
The Trojans’ other win came at No. 1 doubles, as Joe Moede and Jered Brehm posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
All four singles players and Moede-Brehm currently are 8-0 overall.
Falling to Edgerton were Logan Fitch and Jordan Paullin at No. 2 doubles, 3-6, 0-6; and Josh Moede and C.J. D’Amico at No. 2, 4-6, 3-6.
Even in defeat, Lindow has been pleased with the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams’ efforts.
“Our bottom of (the lineup) had a couple of great practices and have really improved by working hard,” he said. “They will continue to get better as the season goes along.”
East Troy traveled to Jefferson on Tuesday in a makeup from Monday.
Following Thursday’s key matchup at Big Foot, East Troy will compete this weekend in the Greendale Martin Luther Invitational, followed by a road match at Whitewater on Monday, May 8.
Softball blanks Whippets
The East Troy softball team scored single runs in the second and third innings, and that was all the offense pitcher Sophia Heimos would need, as the Trojans blanked visiting Whitewater 2-0 last Tuesday.
East Troy improved to 3-5 overall heading into a road contest at McFarland.
A sacrifice fly by Jordan Scheel drove in Samantha Donohoue, who led off with a single, for the Trojans’ first run. East Troy added to its lead in the second on an RBI single by Kaitlyn O’Connell that chased home Kelly Griffa, who tripled with one out.
Offensive leaders were O’Connell (three hits, RBI), Heimos (three hits, including a double), Donohoue (two hits, run scored), Scheel (RBI) and Griffa (triple, run scored).
Heimos allowed just four hits, two walks and struck out two to earn the complete-game win.
East Troy hosted McFarland on Thursday in the second game of the back-to-back set with the Spartans.
Baseball drops two
The East Troy baseball team forced extra innings with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday, but visiting Elkhorn took control with five runs in the eighth in a 9-5 nonconference victory.
East Troy was led by Jon Ciriacks, who had two of the Trojans’ seven hits. Kyle Lehman pitched five innings and struck out three for the Trojans.
More details from the game were unavailable.
East Troy started its week with an 11-0, five-inning RVC loss April 25 to visiting Whitewater.
The Whippets scored in all five of their at bats to end the game via the 10-run rule. East Troy pitcher Brendan Sullivan took the loss, as he walked five and struck out one in 2-1/3 innings.
East Troy traveled to McFarland on Tuesday and hosted the Spartans on Thursday. The Trojans play at Whitewater on Friday afternoon.
Soccer ties, loses
A first-half goal by Laura Saaugaard was all the offense the East Troy girls soccer team could muster in a 1-1 RVC tie April 25 at Fort Atkinson.
East Troy goalie Jessica Gulig had seven saves.
The Trojans followed the tie with a 3-0 nonconference loss two nights later at Elkhorn. East Troy was scheduled to host its own quadrangular Saturday, but results were unavailable.
East Troy returned to action Thursday against visiting Clinton.
