A preliminary hearing was scheduled for April 25 for an Elkhorn man charged with abusing the woman he lives with and threatening police.

Steven E. Maxson, 61, was charged April 13 in Walworth County Circuit Court with felony intimidation of a victim with domestic abuse assessments, two counts of threat to a law enforcement and officer, misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct, both with domestic abuse assessments.

An Elkhorn resident called police to report that a neighbor, a 61-year-old woman, had called and whispered to have police respond to her Page Street home. When police arrived, the woman said Maxson, with whom she had lived for two years, had been drunk for the past three days and had been violent with her for the past couple of days, according to the criminal complaint.

Police found Maxson sleeping in a chair with a bottle of vodka on the floor next to him. Officers tried to rouse Maxson and physical pull him from the chair, and Maxson told two officers, “I’m going to kill you,” according to the complaint.

Maxson was taken to Aurora Lakeland Medical Center where he registered .264 on a preliminary breath test, according to the complaint.

The woman, who was in a wheelchair, told police Maxson had slapped her, causing her ear to bleed; would scream at her and call her derogatory names; locked her puppy in the basement and dragged the woman up the stairs when she tried to get down the stairs on her buttocks to care for the dog; and told her that day to take her clothes off and get in the bedroom, according to the complaint.

The woman said she waited until Maxson passed out to call her neighbor for help, according to the complaint.
