More than 700 households utilize two-day event
During the two-day Clean Sweep event in Walworth County, held Oct. 7 and 8, 634 participant surveys were completed. This number represents 719 households served. The turnout at this year’s event was up from 2015, according to final numbers from the county.
The household Clean Sweep program collected 31,666 pounds of hazardous waste products. These products have been disposed of by various methods including: secondary fuel incineration, neutralization, recycling and hazardous waste incineration. Clean Sweep also collected 400 gallons of used motor oil, 300 gallons of antifreeze, 2,209 pounds of lead acid batteries (vehicle, boat and ATV) and an estimated 200 pounds of rechargeable batteries. The Solid Waste Division will receive $220.90 for the sale of recyclable batteries.
This year’s Clean Sweep program provided three collection sites. The primary collection site was at the Walworth County Public Works Department, Highway NN in Elkhorn. Satellite collection sites were provided at the City of Whitewater Public Works Complex and the Town of Linn Municipal Garage.
Survey data collected from program participants showed that the household event served residents from 15 townships, eight villages and four cities in Walworth County.
The Whitewater collection site also served 22 households from Jefferson County.
This year’s two-day household Clean Sweep event is expected to cost just under $63,000. State grant revenue, contributions from satellite collection site municipalities, reimbursement from Jefferson County, proceeds from the sale of recyclable products, tipping fees received from Mallard Ridge Landfill via Town of Darien, and Solid Waste Restricted Use funds will cover the costs of the event.
