On November 18-20, six students from the Sharon Community School participated in the UW-Milwaukee Middle School Honors Band Festival.

Celebrating its 50th year in existence, the UW-Milwaukee Honors Band Festival is one of the longest running events for Wisconsin youth of its kind nationwide. This festival brings together some of southeastern Wisconsin’s most motivated and advanced youth to work with nationally recognized wind band directors over a period of three days.

Students rehearsed for several hours from the early morning to late in the evening preparing pieces that would normally take months to learn. They were performance-ready in a matter of days.

In addition to rehearsals, students worked with faculty members of UW-Milwaukee in master classes and watched and listened to UWM performing ensembles.

Students were selected based on director recommendations. Over 600 students were nominated; from these recommendations, just over 300 students were selected and placed into three different bands.

Of those selected, six students from Sharon Community School were selected. They were Alexis Boivin (flute), Lorena Bravo and Zsuzana Gyenes (clarinet), Arturo Solis (trumpet), Carlos Wagner (euphonium), and Tiffany Borger (percussion).

The festival culminated on Sunday afternoon, with performances from each of the three bands.
