After a 0-3 start to the season, Delavan-Darien’s girls basketball team pursued and achieved its first win against Elkhorn on Dec. 2. The Comets defeated the Elks, 60-46, pushing the team’s record to 1-3.
After the win against Elkhorn, the team had just one game on its schedule last week. On Dec. 9, the Comets travelled to face a Union Grove team that went 21-5 overall a season ago.
Heading into the game, Union Grove was 4-1, and by the time the contest ended, the Broncos are now 5-1. Delavan-Darien fell behind early, trailing 45-21 at halftime and in the second half, the Comets put up another 21 points, ending in a 77-42 defeat.
Union Grove had the top two scorers in the game, and the top scorer, Daphne Sieg, put in 31. Sieg went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, attempting and making the most free throws out of any player.
From a team perspective, the Comets had the advantage from the charity stripe, making 22 of their 37 attempts compared to the Broncos’ 11-of-22. Kenna Timmerman led all Comets with 18 points, while Alex Gonzalez added 12.
The Comets also made just three 3-pointers compared to the Broncos going 6-of-8 from behind the arc. With the loss, the team is now 1-4 heading into its next contest, which is slated for a 6 p.m. start on Friday against Badger at Delavan-Darien High School.
Coming into the game, Badger is 5-1 overall. A year ago, the two teams met twice and both resulted in close victories for Badger.
The Comets lost the first matchup 40-37 at home and then the second 57-52 on the road.
