The Elkhorn Area High School boys basketball team got gut-punched Dec. 2 in a non-conference game at Waukesha Catholic Memorial.

Coach Josh Skatrud said the Elks outplayed the Crusaders for most of the game, but lost 51-50 when Memorial hit a three-point field goal with two seconds left in regulation.

Elkhorn opened its season Nov. 29 with a 71-42 non-conference win at home against Edgerton.

Elkhorn (1-1) plays Wilmot (1-1) at home Friday in its Southern Lakes Conference opener.

“We outplayed them for 75 percent of the game,” Skatrud said of the game against Memorial. “We had a really bad stretch about halfway through the second half, where we relaxed a bit on defense and got sloppy with the ball and let them hang around.”

Elkhorn led the Crusaders (3-1) 22-17 at halftime, but were outscored 34-28 in the second half.

Ross Ingersoll led the Elks with 19 points, and Alex Easterday added 16.

Easterday led the Elks with 25 against Edgerton (1-2). Elkhorn led 37-21 at halftime, and outscored the Crimson Tide by 13 in the second half.

Lady Elks score season high

A change on offense is leading to more points for the Elkhorn Area High school girls basketball team.

The Elks broke the 40-point mark for the first time this season in a 60-46 Southern Lakes Conference loss Dec. 2 against Delavan-Darien at Delavan.

The Elks lost 69-31 Nov. 29 in a SLC game against Westosha Central at Paddock Lake.

The Elks (0-5, 0-2 SLC) play Wilmot (3-1, 1-1 SLC) at home Friday in a SLC game.

“Defensively, we took a step backwards rotating and helping teammates,” coach Todd Frohwirth said of the Elks’ defense against the Comets. “We went back to hugging the person they are assigned instead of helping and covering teammates.”

Elkhorn trailed Delavan-Darien (1-3, 1-1 SLC) by just five points – 32-27 – at halftime.

Ryley Rand led the Elks with 13 points. Chloe Erhardt added 10.

Payton Christensen led the Elks with 11 points against Central (2-4, 1-2 SLC), and Rand added nine.
