Whitewater Aquatic Center friends to host first formal meeting

A new group, the Friends of Whitewater Aquatic Center was formed by volunteers from the community to support the Whitewater Aquatic and Fitness Center as it continues to serve the community’s health needs. The group will have its first formal meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. at the WAC, 580 S. Elizabeth St.

Founding members and anyone in the community who has a desire to help are welcome to become involved on the board, share their suggestions and more.

“A bunch of us who use the center regularly got together over a year ago to discuss ways to help the center with long-term support, and the Friends of WAC was born. We are excited that so many people in our community are dedicated to the center, and look forward to holding our first formal meeting to brainstorm ways that this group can help make sure that the Whitewater Aquatic Center is a strong, vital center for years to come,” Ron Binning, owner of a local business, Binning and Dickens who organized the Friends of WAC group, said.

The agenda for the meeting includes a welcome by Binning; a brief history of the Friends of WAC by Kasey Reed, election of officers; reports on the Family Partnership Fund by Debbie Oas, programmer at the WAC, and Matt Amundson, director of the city’s Parks & Recreation Dept.; and the opportunity for a group discussion and brain-storming.

The Friends of WAC will support the center with a variety of programs, including the Family Partnership Fund, which makes the pool and fitness room available to everyone in the community, regardless of income. Families that wish to use the center but cannot afford the fees may apply for financial assistance to join. Raising funds for the fund is one way that Friends of WAC can help fulfill its mission of supporting the WAC to maintain and improve the services provided with the goal of bettering the lifelong health and fitness of the citizens of the Whitewater area.

As of July, the City of Whitewater Parks and Recreation Department began overseeing the operations of the Whitewater Aquatic and Fitness Center.

All donations to the Friends of WAC are being processed through the Whitewater Community Foundation, a partner in managing the funds donated to the Whitewater Aquatic Center. Donations via the WCF to the WAC are tax-deductible and will help the Friends of WAC improve the life-long health and fitness of the citizens of the Whitewater area. Donations are separate from the fees to use the pool and gym at the WAC.
