Aquatic Center to undergo interior improvements

The Whitewater Aquatic Center is about to receive a little TLC to its interior as part of a recently announced small-scale capital improvement project within the popular community facility.

Matt Amundson, parks and recreation director, came before the Common Council on Aug. 2 and discussed the plans for WAC’s interior, which are expected to clock in at $13,900. Whitewater-based Strand’s on the Floor has been tapped to perform the work.

Most of the work, Amundson said, entails laying new carpeting throughout the facility. The existing material dates back to WAC’s origins in 2001.

“In addition, the sections of sea green vinyl at locker room entrances and door entrances will be removed and replaced with carpeting,” Amundson said. “All carpeting installed will be square ‘carpet tiles’ that can be replaced when worn or damaged.”

The WAC spruce-up was included within the city’s 2016 capital improvements budget.

In other recent business, the Common Council:

  • Delayed final adoption of revisions to the city’s parking ordinance, which has been under review the past few months. The council last month adopted a first reading of the ordinance. A second, and final, approval of the changes is anticipated at the next meeting this coming Tuesday, Aug. 16.
  • Issued a Class A license to a new establishment, Hops & Notes Homebrew, at 135 W. Center St. The agent of the operation is Jeff Helms. The license only encompasses the sale of packaged beer goods.
  • Gave final approval to property owner Janice Stritzel’s request to rezone vacant land on the northern end of Walton Drive from an institutional designation to multi-family housing.
