Senior night for the Whitewater High School girls soccer team took place on May 26 at the team’s final conference game of the year against Jefferson. For the seniors, it was their final conference game of their high school careers, and they made the most of it with a 6-0 victory.
Whitewater kicked things off early, as in the second minute, senior Autumn Bultman hit a 30-yard shot over the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. The team would never relinquish the lead, and two more goals were scored before the first half came to a close.
Whippet Assistant coach, Richard Gunter, said the team’s midfield and forwards dominated possession in the first half, out-shooting Jefferson in shots on goal, 8-0. Gunter said that once the second half started, most of the seniors were thrown in different positions out on the field, and in the 67th minute, the usual goalkeeper, Ali Sedmak, scored her second goal of the season.
Two more goals followed, en route to the six-goal win. Gunter said that other notable players outside of the goal-scorers were Megan Reynolds, Milena Maroske, Sarah Schiltz and Caleigh Judd, as they helped hold Jefferson to just one shot on goal throughout the entire contest.
With the win, the Whippets moved to 9-3-2 overall and finish the regular season with a conference record of 5-2-1. Thanks to its success during the regular season, the team earned a No. 4 seed for Regional play in the playoffs.
With the No. 4 seed, comes a home match for the first round of the playoffs, which is set to begin at 7 p.m. on June 2 against Delavan-Darien. If the Whippets advance, the team will face the winner of Catholic Memorial-Wisconsin Lutheran on June 4.
Coming into the game, Delavan-Darien possesses a 6-13-3 record over the 2016 season. The Comets and Whippets played each other earlier in the year, back on April 19, when Whitewater hosted the Comets and won, 5-1.
