Whitewater High School’s boys tennis team head coach Alex Mory said the weather conditions were much better for the team’s final regular season meet of the season. The meet was a makeup quadrangular meet on May 18 against Wilmot, Edgerton and Milton.

By the meet’s end, the Whippets won the tournament, defeating all three teams and earning a trophy in the process.

“The highlights of the match included our No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles players of Brodie Runez, Jan Maroske and Dineth Gunawardena going undefeated at their appropriate spots to pick up some great wins against some tough opponents,” Mory said. “At No. 4 singles against Wilmot, sophomore Cole Kinson picked up a great tiebreaker win. It was some exciting tennis to see him pick up his game for the varsity spot.

“Justin Brantmeier and Michael Fernandez both went undefeated, playing with different partners at times and using their awesome footwork to be aggressive and pick apart their opponents in all of the spots and partners they played with,” he said.

“Seniors Griffin Nathan and Devin Samaranayake played some great tennis and almost capped off a few comebacks while playing in their higher spot for two matches but couldn’t pull it off in the end. They played great though and were down 5-0 in their final match against a tough Milton team and came back to 5-4 before going down,” Mory added.

Mory also talked about Mitch Dalzin and Nathaniel Jeppsen about how they played incredible tennis, but came in short in an exciting tiebreaker. The two played with other partners in their matches against Edgerton and Wilmot and won both.

Sub Sectionals was next on the agenda for the Whippets and took place on May 23, determining seeding for the state tournament in Madison. No statistics were available at the time of publication for Sub Sectionals.

The team was set to compete in the WIAA Sectional Tournament beginning May 25 in an effort to qualify for the state meet, set to begin on June 2. The Whippets concluded the regular season with an 11-3 record and a third-place finish in conference.
