The Elkhorn Area High School girls softball team’s 7-2 victory April 29 in a Southern Lakes Conference game at home against Badger hopefully helped ease the pain of consecutive routs.
The Elks lost 10-0 April 27 to Westosha Central at Paddock Lake and lost 13-2 April 25 at home to Wilmot in SLC games.
Elkhorn (4-8, 3-5 SLC) played New Berlin Eisenhower (6-3) Monday in a non-conference game at home. The Elks played a SLC game Tuesday at Waterford (13-10, -8 SLC) and play Delavan-Darien today in a SLC game at home.
Delavan-Darien (13-2, 4-2 SLC) is second in Division 2 in the latest Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association/WisSports.net state poll.
“Collectively, we are inexperienced at the varsity level,” Elks coach Steve Remington said. “We have been playing solid defense the past several weeks, but we lack confidence in the batter’s box. We showed a little confidence at the plate against Badger.”
Rachel Gosh and Hailey Wang both reached base after being hit by pitches in the first inning against Badger (1-10, 0-9). Carolyn Griswold drove in Gosh with a single. Griswold and Wang each scored on a two-run single from Anna Bechtel.
Elkhorn led 3-1. Badger added another run in the fourth and trailed 3-2 before the Elks scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Gosh finished 2-for-2 and was twice hit by a pitch. She singled, doubled, scored three runs and stole a base, and Remington said she is swinging the bat better after a brief slump.
Wang finished with two runs scored, a hit and a RBI. Bechtel drove in two runs. Laine Rudolf tallied two hits and a RBI.
Griswold scattered seven hits over seven innings and struck out six.
