Missed opportunities doom Elks

The Elkhorn Area High School baseball team paid for procrastinating with a loss.

Coach Jon Anzalone said the Elks didn’t put away the Whippets when chances arose and lost 5-4 April 29 in a non-conference game at home.

Elkhorn won 4-0 April 26 in Southern Lakes Conference play at home versus Union Grove and lost 7-3 April 25 in a SLC game at Waterford.

The Elks played Westosha Central (6-5, 3-3 SLC) Tuesday at home and today at Paddock Lake in SLC play. Elkhorn plays Palmyra-Eagle (6-3) Friday in a non-conference game at Palmyra.

The Whippets (6-4) scored three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth and erased a 4-0 Elkhorn lead for the win.

“We had a couple of errors and a couple of walks and they had a couple of hits,” Anzalone said. “We just didn’t put them way when we had the chance.”

Anzalone said the Elks left 12 men on base and never put together a big inning. Elkhorn (3-6, 3-4 SLC) scored a run in each of the first, second, third and fourth innings.

“We nibbled away, one (run) every inning, and never threw the knockout punch,” Anzalone said.

Brandon Komar limited Union Grove to one hit over seven innings and struck out six in the Elks’ victory. Anzalone said Komar threw off-speed for strikes and kept the ball low and around the plate.

“He had one of those games where things were just really working for him,” Komar said.

Pat Glogovsky finished with two hits and drove in a run against the Broncos (3-8, 3-3 SLC). The Elks opened with three runs in the first and scored another in the third.

Elkhorn opened with three runs in the top of the first against Waterford, but the Wolverines answered with three runs in their half of the first and another three in the second for a 6-3 advantage.

“They know how to win,” Anzalone said. “I don’t know what else to say about it. They figure out a way.”

Komar doubled and drove in two runs in the first inning and scored himself on a ground-out by Lucas Harding.

Jet Weber, Ross Ingersoll and Glogovsky each tallied a hit for the Elks against Waterford (9-2, 7-0 SLC).
