Whippets baseball team off to 3-0 start

Track team earns several firsts in home triple dual

The Whitewater Whippets’ baseball team began its season a week ago with a 10-9 win over Big Foot, giving the team the momentum it needed heading into its second week. The Whippets followed it up with two more wins – one against Clinton and another against McFarland – on the road.

The game against Clinton took place on April 7 and the Whippets won, 6-0. Junior pitcher Jacob Lee pitched 5.2 innings while giving up five hits and striking out four batters in the process. This was Lee’s first career start.

Bryce Parrish finished the final 1.1 innings by allowing no runs, hits or walks while striking out two hitters. Head coach Jim Pease said the team played great defensively throughout the night, and it showed as the team had no errors.

Julian Sonn was the standout offensively, going 3-for-4 while recording three RBIs. Jake Riemer went 1-for-4 and scored two runs before the game was over.

In the game against McFarland on April 12, the Whippets won a higher-scoring affair, 9-6. No stats have been posted as of the time of publication.

The Whippets are now 3-0 on the season and its next game is slated to start at 4:45 p.m. April 14 against McFarland again, this time coming at Whitewater High School. McFarland is now 3-2 after the loss.

 

Strong showing by track team

The Whitewater High School co-ed track team hosted a Rock Valley Conference triple dual on April 12 against Edgerton and McFarland and finished ahead of Edgerton, but behind McFarland.

On the boys side, Jon Zheng recorded a personal-best and beating out all other jumpers with a 19’ 1” in the long jump. Connor Rupke was another winner, recording an 11.6 second 100-meter dash.

Two relay teams also won on Tuesday, as the 4×800-meter team of Chenoweth, Korf, Laue and VanderPlyum won in 9:02.6. The 4×400-meter relay team took first with a time of 3:45.3 thanks to Mattingly, Gross, Villegas and Rasmussen.

For the girls, head coach John Houwers said Nicole Frison continued to improve, proving so with a personal-best 17.7 second mark in the 100-meter hurdles. Kelly O’Hara won the long jump with a 15’ 5” and Keely Fiedler won the pole vault competition by clearing an eight-foot bar.

Abby King was another winner for the Whippets, with hers coming in the 3200-meter race with a time of 12:46.2.

The team’s next meet will start at 4:30 p.m. on April 19 at Whitewater High School against East Troy.
