Entering the week at 11-7 overall, the Delavan-Darien boys basketball team had two games on its schedule last week with two more remaining this week. The team split the two games last week, moving to 12-8 overall.

Starting with Muskego on Feb. 15, the Comets fell behind early, and it snowballed from there. The Comets were down 43-28 by halftime. Then in the second half Muskego put up 45 more points en route to its 88-57 victory.

Two different Muskego players scored 23 points apiece in the game, leading all scorers. For the Comets, Lucas Delara scored 15, thanks to four made three-pointers. William Brown also had four assists to go along with his 13 points.

As a team, the Comets had 14 assists to its 17 turnovers and recorded six steals. The free throw line proved to be vital as well, as Muskego shot 17 of 24 from the charity stripe compared to the Comets’ five of 11.

Four days after the 31-point defeat came a home game against Elkhorn. The two teams played tightly throughout, but, in the final few minutes, the Comets pulled out the win thanks to a 14-3 run.

The run gave the Comets a five-point lead with 1:44 remaining after trailing 23-18 at half. The final 1:44 was tight, but a final free throw and defensive stop was the difference, giving the team the 49-47 victory.

Seth Kirsch led the team in scoring with 16 but was out-done by Elkhorn’s Alex Easterday, who put in 25. Alongside Kirsch for the Comets was Brandon Edmonds who scored six points but grabbed 12 rebounds in the contest. No Comet besides Kirsch scored more than eight points.

As a team, both assists and turnovers were down but even, with seven assists and seven turnovers. The Comets shot nine of 19 from the free throw line and went two of 16 from behind the arc, but had nine steals and shot 50 percent from within the three-point line.

Now at 12-8 on the season, the team’s next two games could be the difference between hosting a first-round game in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament and having to go on the road. The Comets’ next contest was slated for Monday against Big Foot at home.

Following the team’s final home game will be its last road game of the regular season, starting at 7 p.m. Thursday against Badger High School. Big Foot entered with an 8-12 record while Badger is playing .500 basketball at 10-10.
