Caroline Elizabeth Hookstead, 94, passed away Dec. 23, 2015, at Fairhaven in Whitewater.
She was born in Eagle, Feb. 28, 1921, the daughter of Fred and Agnes (Smart) Detlof. She married Raymond Hookstead May 15, 1943, in Mukwonago. They were area farmers until Ray’s illness in 1972, at which time Carloline cared for him at home. He preceded her in death in 1974. In 1976 she became the first in house laundry service manager at Fairhaven, retiring in 1992. Caroline moved into an independent living apartment in 1993. She moved into assisted living in 2010 and then skilled nursing care in 2012. Her long affiliation with Fairhaven truly did add “life to her years.” She was a dedicated employee and a dedicated volunteer at Fairhaven after her retirement. Caroline was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Whitewater.
Surviving are her three children: Agnes “Spark” Thomas, of Whitewater; Lois (Frank) Mach, of Fort Atkinson; Alvin “Butch” (Mary) Hookstead, of East Troy; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by a dear friend, Pat Quass.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Edna, Mabel, Esther; and two brothers: Sidney and Herbert.
Funeral Services will take place Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Nitardy Funeral Home, 550 N. Newcomb Street, Whitewater, with the Rev. Jonathan Rossman officiating. Burial will be in Milton Lawn Cemetery in Janesville. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.
Memorials may be designated to Fairhaven Benevolent Fund or St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Donald Williams, Pastor Rossman, Fairhaven’s loving staff, Kris Draeger, Lavonne Wegner, Betty Schelb, Lupe Garcia, Judy Kinney and Rainbow Hospice.
