A second-half rally last week brought the Big Foot boys basketball team within striking distance of visiting Whitewater.

But the Chiefs couldn’t get any closer.

Big Foot trailed 19-13 at halftime and pulled to within four at 40-36 before the Whippets closed the game on a 13-6 run to post a 53-42 Rock Valley Conference victory.

The loss dropped the Chiefs to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the RVC heading into a non-conference matchup Tuesday night at Milton. Results of that contest were unavailable this week.

Junior Beau Cary had another big night for the Chiefs, as he had a team-high 24 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior Zak Greco chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and six assists.

Big Foot is back in action Dec. 29 and 30, when it travels to the Lake Mills Tournament.

Comments from Big Foot head coach Mike Dowden were unavailable this week.

Berryman leads wrestlers

Big Foot’s Travis Berryman finished third overall at 120 pounds to lead the Chiefs at Saturday’s Mt. Horeb Tournament.

Berryman had a first-round bye, followed by a pinfall victory in 3:06 over Mt. Horeb’s Cameron Eye.

After an 8-6 overtime loss in the semifinals to La Crosse Central’s Todd Werner, Berryman rebounded to pin Palmyra Eagle’s Ricky Smith in 1:25 in the third-place match.

Big Foot’s only other win on the mat came from Rodney Flom (152), who was 1-3 overall.

Also competing for Big Foot were Titus Frederick (126), Brennan Malone (145), Ethan Roland (195) and Nick Freymiller (285), who each were 0-2 overall.

Big Foot finished 15th in the 16-team field with 25 points. Mt. Horeb won the team title with 216.5 points, followed by Merrill with 151, Parkview with 147, La Crosse Central with 131.5 and Oregon with 120.5.

The Chiefs are back in action next week when they travel to UW-Whitewater to compete in the annual Mid-States Tournament Dec. 29 and 30.
