On Sunday, Nov. 22, at both the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. worship services, First United Methodist Church, 145 S. Prairie St., Whitewater will celebrate the music ministry of Jim Athas, who has been the church’s organist for 40 years. The worship services will include an organ presentation, arrangements of Athas’ favorite hymns and a close-up view of his feet and hands while he performs. The 10 a.m. service will feature a special anthem by the choir.
When Jim started playing in 1975, he was a college student at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is a retired first grade teacher for the Fort Atkinson School District and is currently working with the Fort Atkinson High School choirs and theatre productions as accompanist and rehearsal pianist.
He serves as adjunct faculty for UW-Whitewater’s music department and is also Music Director and offers leadership for FUMC’s Praise Team, Advent Ensemble and other music groups.
Athas and his wife, Barb, who sings soprano in the church’s choir, have shared their musical gifts at countless weddings and funerals. They have four children: Aaron (Allie), Katie (Nathan), Joe and Ana; and a grandson, Charlie.
Following the 10 a.m. service Sunday, a reception to honor Athas will be held in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
