Waterford shuts out Delavan-Darien

Waterford High School’s football team started fast in its game against Delavan-Darien High School on Friday.

The Comets (4-3) went up against Waterford (7-0), and, by the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines were up 28-0 in front of their home crowd thanks to four different players scoring rushing touchdowns. In the second quarter, the momentum continued, as the Wolverines scored three more rushing touchdowns.

At halftime, the Comets found themselves down 49-0 with six different Wolverines scoring on the ground. In the third quarter, both defenses played well, as neither team scored.

In the final quarter, the Wolverines tacked on another rushing touchdown with its seventh different player and eventually winning the game, 55-0. Comets quarterback Jacob Benzing went seven of 20 in the game for 55 yards and one interception after not playing a week ago.

Benzing, who typically does damage on the ground as well, totaled -49 yards because of sacks. Starting running back Fabias Shipman ran the ball eight times for a total of nine yards. The Comets’ leading receiver, Ethan Cesarz, recorded two catches for 29 yards.

For the Wolverines, 13 different players had at least one rushing attempt in the game. None ran more than seven times, and four different players ran for at least 44 yards. Anthony Miller had the best statistical day, carrying the ball six times for 82 yards and was the only player to score two touchdowns.

Entering the final week of the regular season, the Comets are set to host Wilmot Union (7-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. Coming into the final matchup, Wilmot is averaging more than 28 points per game and has scored 22 rushing touchdowns compared to seven through the air.

Wilmot Union has won five straight, while the Comets are 1-1 in their last two, while going 1-4 over their last five after starting the season 3-0.
