The Elkhorn Area High School boys soccer team recently went undefeated against two quality opponents, and is in a good shape as it heads into its Southern Lakes Conference season.
Elkhorn played to a 2-2 draw Sept. 3 at home against non-conference foe Milton and beat Racine St. Catherine’s 3-2 Sept. 1 in a non-conference match at home.
The Elks opened their SLC season Thursday at Wilmot (2-2-2 overall). Elkhorn plays Big Foot (4-4) Saturday in a non-conference match at Big Foot.
“We had some opportunities,” Elks coach BZ Kayser said of the match versus Milton. “We outshot them again. I don’t what’s going on. It’s good. I’m glad we’re outshooting these teams.”
Kayser said the Elks have outshot every opponent this season, and would like to see the Elks shoot more.
“We’re inexperienced up front with two sophomores,” Kayser said. “I don’t know why they don’t shoot more. I don’t know if they’re concerned I’m going to get after them.”
Kevin Romero and Leo Loredo start at forward for the Elks. Andrew Slack scored both the Elks’ goals against Milton.
The score was 1-1 at halftime. Slack scored again in the second half and gave the Elks a 2-1 lead before Milton evened the score with another goal.
“Obviously I would like to have won because it’s a seeding game, and eventually it’s going to come down in our regional for who’s going to get the higher seed – us or Milton,” Kayser said. “That’s where I was disappointed.”
The Elks and Red Hawks are in the same regional bracket for WIAA Division 2 postseason play, and are developing a nice non-conference rivalry.
Elkhorn lost 3-0 last season to Milton and ended the Red Hawks’ season in 2013 with a 1-0 win in the sectional semifinals.
Romero, Loredo and Matt Nelson scored for the Elks against St. Catherine’s (2-2). The Angels are ranked fourth in Division 4 in the most recent Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state poll.
The two sides played to a tie 1-1 at halftime. Nelson scored off a set piece with less than 10 minutes left in regulation and broke a 2-2 tie.
