The Badger High School football team lost a 26-25 heartbreaker on the road to Kenosha Bradford on Friday night in overtime.
The Badgers were stopped on a two-point conversion attempt that would have won the game. Instead they went home with their first loss of the season.
Bradford’s Kyle Sinclair tied the game at 19 with a 27-yard field goal with less than 10 seconds left in regulation. Bradford then scored first on the opening possession of overtime on a 15-yard touchdown run by Erick Doyle. The extra point gave Bradford a seven-point lead but Badger had one opportunity to answer.
Quarterback Isaac Ziervogel provided the answer with a two-yard touchdown run that brought the Badgers within one. Head Coach Matt Hensler decided to go for two and the win rather than try to kick a game-tying extra point. Badger had experienced a little bit of everything on its previous three scores converting one extra point, failing on another and failing on a two-point conversion attempt.
Bradford helped the Badgers by jumping offsides, so the conversion attempt came from the one-yard line instead of the two. Christian Martinez got the call on an outside run but Bradford’s defense was not fooled, and Martinez was stopped short of the goalline preserving Bradford’s victory.
Badger overcame a 10-point deficit in regulation. Badger scored first on a touchdown run by Martinez but the point after was unsuccessful. Bradford’s Tony Martin connected with Jake Kentala on a 21-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and the extra point gave Bradford a 7-6 lead. Sinclair kicked a 32-yard field goal to make it 10-6 at the half.
Martin and Kentala connected again in the third quarter, this time for 12 yards. The extra point failed and Bradford led 16-6.
Tyler VanDeVelde scored on a 32-yard run but the two-point conversion was stopped short. Badger trailed 16-12. Martinez gave the Badgers the lead with a 21-yard run and the extra point was good. Badger led 19-16 with about two minutes to play. Bradford was able to drive into Badger territory and Sinclair booted his 27-yard field goal that led to overtime.
Badger was led by VanDeVelde’s 105 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Martinez added 45 yards on nine carries with two scores. The Badger offense was plagued by three lost fumbles.
Bradford (1-1) was led by Martin and Kentala. Martin completed 22 of 32 passes for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Kentala had 110 receiving yards on 11 receptions and was at the other end of both of Martin’s scoring throws.
Badger (1-1) hosts Burlington (2-0) on Friday night. Burlington defeated Racine Horlick 39-24 last Friday.
