Whitewater High School’s girls swimming team began competitive play against seven other schools on Aug. 27 in a conference relay meet held in Jefferson. The Whippets had 10 top-eight relay finishes, and three of which, earned medals.

In the 1,000 freestyle relay, Madeline Kuhl, Anna Yeazel and Grace Fanshaw took third place. Head coach Gina Foucault said the trio, “displayed great poise while tracking down their competitors one by one.”

Another third-place finish took place for the Whippets in the 500 freestyle relay by the quartet of Yeazel, Kuhl, Fanshaw and Sydney Zimdars. Foucault said the girls swam amazing again, putting forth their best effort to “compile an amazing relay.”

The third set of girls to put together a medal-winning third-place finish was Debra Krebs, Sydney Hackney, Fanshaw and Zimdars.

Fanshaw also bettered her top-10 all-time individual time in the 100 breaststroke by going 1:17.99, which was good for No. 7 overall.

The Whippets’ next meet of the season is at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 in an away meet against Delavan-Darien at their high school.

Cross Country

On Aug. 29, Whitewater High School held an alumni meet at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Head coach Chad Carstens said that under the soggy conditions, junior runner Brodie Runez debuted nicely as the No. 1 runner for the boys.

No. 2 and No. 3 runners, Jacob Korf and Connor Laue, respectively, nearly tied their best times from all of last season. Alumnus Brett Harms and Joel Tortomasi finished first and second overall.

For the girls, Carstens said Sarah Ziolkowski and Andrea Sandoval ran the race together up front and looked very strong. Nicole Tomomitsu and Lan Vo “also debuted very nicely finishing as the team’s No. 5 and No. 6 runners.”

Elizabeth Oezers topped all girl alumnus runners by finishing sixth overall. The next meet for both teams will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Verona Invitational at Verona Area High School.
