Roberta’s Art Gallery, located in the University Center at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is hosting an exhibit featuring creative and whimsical quilts by Barbara Carlson, from Calico Rock, Arkansas.
“Dancing With A Red Umbrella” will be on display until Aug. 14 with a reception scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 6 with light refreshments being provided.
The exhibit displays art quilts designed by Carlson, who for many years worked as a software application and customer service trainer, while also taking time to develop her skills in needlework to keep her creativity alive. She was never trained as a professional quilter, but her work has achieved professional quality. Carlson approaches her quilt creations with a sense of adventure and curiosity, not limited by preconceived rules or boundaries. Combining new materials and techniques keeps her work fresh and interesting for her and her audience. Since 2008, she has displayed her work in various museums and shows.
Carlson’s quilt creations are described as “part wild and whimsical” and she is particularly passionate about her portrait quilts, which bring out her unique style. The “Dancing With A Red Umbrella” exhibit brings together these two distinct styles and a daring spirit to try something new and different.
The exhibit is open to the public free of charge with gallery hours as follows: Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
