The Elkhorn Area High School baseball team scored two runs in the first inning and beat Milwaukee Hamilton 4-0 May 8 in a non-conference game at Warner Park in Madison.
The Elks dropped two Southern Lakes Conference games last week to Westosha Central. Elkhorn lost 6-3 May 7 at home and 12-0 May 6 at Salem.
Elkhorn played Burlington (7-8, 4-5 SLC) Tuesday at home and plays today at Burlington in SLC games. The Elks play Big Foot (4-12) tomorrow in a non-conference game at home.
Pitchers Brandon Komar and Joe Konopski combined to limit Hamilton (8-8) to one hit. Konopski struck out five.
“They were right around the strike zone all game long,” Elks coach Jon Anzalone said. “We played good defense.”
Patrick Glogovsky homered for the Elks and drove in a run. Konopski finished with two hits.
“They just kind of cruised their way along, and did what they needed to do,” Anzalone said. “It never seemed like we were in any trouble, from start to finish.”
Pitcher Nik Kimball gave the Elks seven strong innings in the 6-3 loss to Westosha.
“He pitched another really good game, and that one came down to a couple of mistakes on the base paths,” Anzalone said.
Central took an early lead with three runs in the first inning, and scored another run in the second inning before the Elks (4-11, 1-7 SLC) answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.
The Falcons (11-4, 6-2 SLC) scored again in the sixth and seventh innings.
Dylan Linhart drove in two runs and Dylan Peterson finished with two hits for the Elks.
“We just came up short,” Anzalone said. “It was a good game – we just fell short.”
Anzalone said the Elks did a fine job rebounding and playing Central close in the 6-3 loss after previously losing 12-0.
“That was not our day,” Anzalone said of the 12-0 loss. “But the big thing is the kids came back and we played a good ball game.
“I was proud of the kids. The kids bounced back right away and came at the same team, and they were competitive. Those are some of the things we work on – consistency and being competitive.”
