Boys track brings home division title

For the past several meets, East Troy High School boys and girls track coach Josh Herrell has watched his teams surpass a previous-best effort.
But last Tuesday night, the Trojans even outdid themselves.
The East Troy boys became the second team this school year to bring home a Rock Valley Conference North Division title, the Trojans’ fourth straight first-place finish.

“I know I have said this recently, but this really was our best week of the season,” Herrell said.
“I was so proud of (the boys’) accomplishments. They have pushed each other so hard during the course of the season in pursuit of greatness, and they achieved it.”
East Troy’s boys recorded 159 points, ahead of McFarland’s 118 and Whitewater’s 101. Rounding out the team scores were Jefferson with 78 points, Edgerton with 60 and Evansville with 31.
Highlighting the boys’ effort was Jake Wendt, who won the shot put with a North Division Meet record toss of 57-6. He also was third in the discus.
Leaders for the boys included Charlie Kutschenreuter, first in the 100 and 200 and second in the 400 and long jump; Nathan Nguyen, second in the 100 and 800, fifth in the triple jump and was the anchor of the third-place 1,600-meter relay team; Jake Remsza, third in the 400 and was on the third-place 3,200- and 1,600-meter relay teams; Truman Kent, third in the 300-hurdles and fifth in the 110-hurdles;
Billy Dominski, second in the 100-hurdles and fifth in the 300-hurdles; Brody Kazik, third in the 1,600 and 3,200 and was on the third-place 3,200-meter relay team; Anthony Leahy, first in the high jump; Evan Harding, fourth in the 1,600, sixth in the 800 and was on the third place 1,600-meter relay team; Eli Leising, sixth in the 300-hurdles; and Miles Kilpin, second in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 53-10 1/2 and second in the discus.
“I thought we’d be competitive in the meet, but I never thought we would dominate it in the way we did, winning by 41 points,” Herrell said. “The boys were so focused and determined throughout the entire meet.”
On the girls’ side, McFarland finished with 150 points, followed by East Troy with 142 and Jefferson with 124.
Winning division titles were Erin Parr in the 800, Hope Schneider in the high jump and Callie Vogel in the triple jump.
Other top efforts were recorded by Tori Miller, second in the 110-hurdles; M.E. Dodge, second in the shot put and discus; Katrina Santos, second in the long jump and third in the high jump and triple jump; Katie Hodges, third in the 800; Hannah Buccholtz, third in the pole vault and sixth in the high hurdles; Erin Parr, fourth in the 1,600; Sydney Scadden, fourth in the 100-hurdles and third in the 300-hurdles;
Callie Vogel, fourth in the long jump; Charlotte Plehn, fourth in the 400; Katie Zewiske, fifth in the long jump; Katrina Santos, sixth in the 200; Amanda Bustillos, fifth in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600; and Katie Flynn, sixth in the 3,200.
The 3,200-meter relay team of Hodges, Heather Vivian, Plehn and Parr was second, while third-place relay finishes were turned in by the 1,600-team of Schneider, Hodges, Plehn and Scadden; the 800-team of Schneider, Vogel, Dodge and Zewiske; and the 400-team of Schneider, Vogel, Dodge and Buccholtz.
“I was very pleased with their performance,” Herrell said. “When we faced McFarland in our dual, they beat us pretty handily. The girls used that as motivation to work hard and close that gap and they did. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
