The Whitewater High School girl’s softball team defeated Jefferson in both games of a doubleheader last Thursday night winning the first game 5-3 and the second game 8-1.

In the first game on May 7, the Whippets scored runs in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead. But Jefferson fought back and tallied three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Whitewater regained the lead as Sierra Minton drove in two runs with two outs in the fourth inning to make it 4-3. The Whippets added an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Michaela Schumacher’s consistent pitching and tough, error-free defensive play by the Whippets shut the Eagles down the rest of the game. Schumacher went the distance on the hill as she gave up five hits while striking out eight batters.

Whitney Treder and Schumacher had two hits each. Treder also scored two runs and had two stolen bases.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Whitewater exploded for three runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead.

Emily Stoll had a clutch single with two outs in the third inning to drive in two runs. Schumacher followed that up with a clutch two-run double the following inning to give the Whippets a comfortable lead.

Jefferson scored its only run in the fifth inning but Izzy Zahn shut the Eagles out the rest of the way for the win. Zahn threw a complete game giving up six hits while striking out three batters.

The Whippet defense again played tough in the field, holding Jefferson to just one run. On offense, Schumacher and Zahn had two hits while Schumacher, Stoll and Zahn drove in two runs each.

Whitewater moved into third place in the Northern Rock Valley with a 9-5 record following the double win late last week.

The Whippets were gearing up for a busy schedule this week. They had a game at Edgerton Tuesday; they are set to host Edgerton tonight for senior and parents’ night – game time is 4:45 p.m.; and tomorrow and Saturday the team will travel to Delavan-Darien to play in the Walworth County Invitational tournament.
