In a talk geared toward the computer, math and science buffs, the Whitewater Innovation Center will host Ed Karrels, Fort Atkinson’s Pi guy next Thursday night at a free event open to the public.
Shortly after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Karrels became Google’s 56th employee (Google now employs 53,600) where he worked until 2005. After retiring when Google went public, Karrels became a master’s student in computer engineering at Santa Clara University and computed Pi to the furthest recorded digit, the ten quadrillionth.
Karrels has established scholarships in computer science for Fort Atkinson High School and a scholarship in music for the UW-Oshkosh. He currently works with Whitewater Innovation Center client Blackthorne.
At the March 26 event, Karrels will discuss his process for computing Pi, the equipment he modified to run the program, the applications of Pi and just how many digits of Pi anyone really needs. He may also touch on how a series of internships and networking opportunities led to his position at Google.
The event, part of the Elements for Success series featuring experts in areas of interest to local and regional business owners and entrepreneurs – will begin at 5:30 p.m. with networking and refreshments, including pies. Karrel’s presentation will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a question and answer session.
The Whitewater University Technology Park Innovation Center is located at 1221 Innovation Dr., Whitewater. Advanced registration is requested but not required. To RSVP visit bitly.com/EFS032615.
