At the Southern Lakes Conference Swimming Championships, the Whippets were able to swim their way to a third place finish.
Traveling to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville did not seem to bother the boys as they brought home the highest finish ever at a conference championship for the WHS team.
Individual champions including: Jon Zimdars, 200 Individual Medley and 100 Fly; Jason Shelbourn, 100 Backstroke; Benny Liang, 100 Breaststroke; and two relays – the 400 Freestyle and 200 Medley – swam by, Jon Zimdars, Wentao Guo, Jason Shelbourn and Benny Liang.
Placing second in their events and bringing home silver medals Shelbourn, 50 Freestyle; Liang, 100 Freestyle; and Guo, 100 Backstroke.
Guo also finished third in the 200 Individual Medley while Seth Bols earned a fourth place finish in the same event.
Fun, fast meet
Prior to the championship meet, the Whippet boys swimming team took to the pool in Elkhorn for a junior varsity conference swim meet. Whitewater finished third overall at the event.
Coach Joan Domitrz, who said the team was looking forward to the SLC Conference meet, said the Elkhorn meet “was a fun fast meet for everyone. Every swimmer on the team medaled. There were many great races and some exciting finishes.”
Swimmers that placed in Elkhorn were as follows: first place – Karlo Martinovic, 50 Free and 100 Fly; 200 Free Relay team of AJ Gildner, Mohamed Mohamed and Ricardo Cid; 400 Free Relay team of Karlo Martinovic, Mohamed Mohamed, Dineth Gunawardena and Ricardo Cid; second place – 200 Medley Relay team of Jacob Korf, Dineth Gunawardena, Kit Zoesch-Laumann and AJ Gildner; and Kit Zoesch-Laumann in the 200 Individual Medley and 400 Freestyle; third place finishes were earned by Jack Downs in the 200 Freestyle and Dineth Gunawardena in the 100 Breast; swimming their way to fourth place were: Carlo Cid, 100 Freestyle, Jacob Korf, 100 Backstroke and Jack Downs, 400 Freestyle.
