The usually consistent three-point shooting of the Delavan-Darien High School boys basketball team was silenced Friday night in Elkhorn when the Elks topped the Comets, 62-54 in the Comets only game of the week.
The Comets, who are now 1-6 in the Southern Lakes Conference, made only seven of 23 attempts against the Elks, who stepped up their defense against the perimeter-shooting team.
“From the three-point range, 30 percent is below our average,” D-DHS head coach Bob Beighton said. “I think Elkhorn did a solid job of defending the arc.”
“Our issues were not setting up our screens and waiting for screens to create space. We were in a hurry to get open and bad things happen when you rush,” Beighton said.
Starting off with an 11-7 first-quarter lead, the Comets were outscored 18-15 in the second quarter but still hung on to a one-point lead at halftime, taking a 26-25 edge into the locker room.
The Elks came out of the locker room in the third quarter, picking up their defense against the Comets and their offense put 15 points on the board, taking the lead at 40-36 after the Comets scored only 10.
The Comets did whatever they could in the fourth quarter to get back into the game, but with Ethan Cesarz and Jesse Collins fouling out and the lack of three-point shooting, the Comets fell 65-24.
Collins, in his first game of the season after returning from an injury, led the Comets with 12 points and added five rebounds.
Isaac Ramos added ninepoints, and William Brown and Isiah Ramos had eight points each.
The Ramos’ each added three assists.
Cesarz finished with six points and added seven rebounds.
The Comets head to Lake Geneva Badger Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. game.
