A Delavan man suspected of being under the influence of prescription drugs was arrested Jan. 20 after a two-car crash that injured himself and a dog in another vehicle.

Kyle J. Kordosky, 28, was arrested for abuse of a hazardous substance and cited for inattentive driving, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, operating without a valid license and unreasonable and imprudent speed.

The 1998 Ford Taurus that Kordosky was driving crashed into the back of a 2004 Toyota on Highway 50 at the on-ramp to northbound Interstate 43 at about 9:20 a.m. Jan. 20, according to police. The impact pushed the Toyota, driven by Nicole Martin, under Interstate 43 on westbound Highway 50, said Police Chief Tim O’Neill. A dog in the back of the car Martin was driving was injured from being tossed around inside the car during the crash, O’Neill said. Martin was not hurt.

Kordosky told police he was reaching for his lighter that he dropped on the floorboard of his car and didn’t even know what he crashed into at first, according to the police report.

Kordosky’s vehicle sustained significant front-end damage inconsistent with a crash at the posted speed limit of 35 mph. Kordosky was extricated from the car.

“We usually don’t see crashes of that severity in 25- to 35-mph zones,” O’Neill said.

Officers said Kordosky seemed confused, was repeatedly asking for a cigarette and had slurred speech. He told an officer he was “probably going pretty fast,” and a Darien emergency medical technician who witnesses the crash estimated the car was traveling about 60 mph before the impact, according to the report.

Kordosky suffered a laceration and bump to his head, which he said he felt no effect from. When an officer asked if Kordosky was on any medications, he said he was on an antibiotic and Vicodin, which he took the day before, according to the report.
