The Elkhorn Area High School boys basketball team’s 63-52 loss Jan. 16 at home in a Southern Lakes Conference game against Wilmot is one that might leave the Elks scratching their heads.

“It’s a disappointing loss,” Elks coach Josh Skatrud said. “We had a ten-point lead midway through the third quarter and turned the ball over four times in a row to let them get back in it and eventually win.”

Elkhorn (7-5, 1-4 SLC) played Lake Geneva Badger (6-2, 4-1 SLC) Monday at home and plays arch rival Delavan-Darien (4-8, 1-5 SLC) Friday at home.

Against Wilmot (8-3, 4-1 SLC) the Elks led 30-29 at halftime and outscored the Panthers 17-16 in the third quarter.

Elkhorn led 47-45 at the end of the third quarter. Wilmot outscored the Elks 18-5 in the fourth quarter.

“We really hurt them by getting the ball inside, but had a difficult time getting into our offense in the fourth quarter,” Skatrud said. “It was a game where we had plenty of chances, but did not make enough plays to win.”

Alex Easterday led the Elks with 19 points. Dayne Fisher scored 11. Wilmot’s Bobby Brenner scored a game-high 27, and Bryce Kothe added 22.

“I feel we are close to beating some good conference teams, if we can eliminate the bad stretch we seem to have every game,” Skatrud said.

Elkhorn beat Whitewater 47-35 Jan. 12 in a non-conference game at Whitewater. Skatrud said the Elks scored 36 of their 47 points against the Whippets (3-8, 3-4 Rock Valley North) in the paint.

Easterday scored a game-high 22 points for the Elks. Joe Konopski added 14. Samuel Fuller led Whitewater with 15 points.

More points, but no wins

The Elkhorn Area High School girls basketball team is scoring more points in recent games, but those points are not translating into more wins.

The Elks lost 55-41 Jan. 16 at home in a Southern Lakes Conference game against Wilmot.

The Panthers (6-7, 4-3 SLC) and Elks (1-13, 1-6 SLC) played to a 21-21 halftime tie.

Wilmot outscored Elkhorn 12-7 in the third quarter and 22-13 in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers outscored the Elks 34-20 in the second half.

Abbie Kolacke led Elkhorn with 11 points, and Megan Skoczylas added nine. Wilmot’s Rachel Szyldowski scored a game-high 15, and led three Panthers in double figures. The Panthers’ Sam Kirk scored 12, and Olivia Klahs added 10.
